Low Fat Diet After An Extreme Diets
Although the conclusion of the study published by the Journal of the American Dietetic Association may not seem like another world for those who have followed ever so popular diets like Atkins, South Beach or Ornish plan may be useful especially if you suffer from heart or have high cholesterol.
Diet ‘Atkins’ example by banning carbohydrates, while allowing foods rich in saturated fats like butter and red meat.
In turn the diet ‘South Beach’ emphasizes the moderate dose of unsaturated fats like olive oil and turn carbohydrates into ‘good’ from plants or vegetables. The Ornish plan is instead a vegetarian diet low in fat effectively to prevent heart attack.
Investigators at first did not seek to study the weight loss that these diets cause, but the biological effects of these in cholesterol, blood vessel function and inflammation. The 26 participants were non-obese patients following each of the three diets for a month and allowances were structured so as to maintain their weight.
After a month the Atkins diet caused an increase of cholesterol called ‘bad’ (LDL), while the South Beach and Ornish managed to reduce by 12% and 17% respectively cholesterol. Besides this was the best performance came in the arterial and venous function, since increasing the number of saturated fat decreased the function of these. That is, according to this study extreme diets low in saturated fat once past its acute phase (one in which there is loss of fat), would be an excellent prescription for a healthy heart and healthy life.
